SPRUCE KNOB - 4,861 FT.
Highest Point in West Virginia
June 11, 2003 (My 11th Highpoint)

This was my third highpoint of the day as I had cleared Mount Davis (PA) and Backbone Mountain (MD) earlier in the day. The drive from Backbone Mountain was slightly less than two hours to the summit of Spruce Knob. I took US 33 South, county roads 4 and 6, and forest routes 112 and 104 to the summit. Note that approximately 20 miles (roundtrip) of this trip are on unpaved earth road, so it is slow going on these parts.

There is a 50 yard walk to the observation tower which affords a beautiful view of the surrounding area. Weather was a cool 70 degrees with a light wind.
