CLINGMANS DOME - 6,643 FT.
Highest Point in Tennessee
July 22, 2003 (My 14th Highpoint)

From I-40, I took US 321 and US 441 to Gatlinburg. Let me tell you how crowded Gatlinburg was. It was crowded. I vowed never to return to this town again. Crazy. I think it rained the entire time I was in the park. From US 441, I took the 7 mile access road to Clingman's Dome.

The hike on the paved trail is about one mile roundtrip, and, apparently, it is quite steep. There were several benches on the trail to the top; each one had at least one person on. A lot of out-of-shape vacationers. On the summit, there is an observation tower in the shape of a flying saucer. As is usually the case, any chance at a view was completely fogged-out by the surrounding rainclouds. Weather was 70 degrees with a solid rain. After the highpoint I continued on home to Orlando.

The guy was nice enough to take my picture so I won't make fun of his poor camera use.
