SASSAFRAS MOUNTAIN - 3,560 FT.
Highest Point in South Carolina
March 15, 2003 (My 3rd Highpoint)

The night before going to Sassafras Mountain, I spent in nearby Table Rock State Park. I was unprepared for such a cold night, as the temperatures on this night dipped into the 40s with moderate rainfall. I ended up spending the night in the car (instead of the tent) since I hadn't been prepared enough to bring my sleeping bag. From Table Rock State Park I took SR 11 west to US 178. I took US 178 North to the F. Clayton Memorial Highway. Do not let the word "highway" fool you. This road to the highpoint is gravel with a safe speed of no more than 30 mph. However, the gravel road is well-maintained.

When I visited this highpoint there was only two other hikers and their dog. The odd thing about this highpoint, was the fact that there was not a whole lot to tell you that this was the highest point in South Carolina. Temperature was in the mid 70s. After finishing this highpoint I headed off for Brasstown Bald - the highest point in Georgia. A bit of advice to anyone making the trek from Sassafras to Brasstown: if you're interested in making good time, don't take US 64, which goes through North Carolina. It is a beautiful drive, but winding and extremely narrow at several points.

Not sure why the hood is up.
