WOODALL MOUNTAIN - 806 FT.
Highest Point in Mississippi
May 18, 2003 (My 6th Highpoint)

After hitting Cheaha Mountain (Alabama) the day before, I made the drive through Birmingham to Iuka, MS, which is the closest town to Woodall Mountain. I took US 72 through Alabama to Iuka, then took SR 25 and county roads 187 and 176 to a mile-long red earth road. Although the road is unpaved red earth, it is not a terrible drive up - I drove up in 2nd gear, to be safe. The road looks like it belongs on Mars - it's that red.

The highpoint is the home to a high voltage communications tower (see picture). Also in the picture is my car, making a cameo appearance. The view off the top is surprising, despite being less than 1,000 feet above sea level. After leaving the highpoint I drove on the Natchez Trace Parkway through Mississippi on my way to Jackson. The Parkway is a beautiful limited-access road - drive part of it if you get the chance.
