EAGLE MOUNTAIN - 2,301 FT.
Highest Point in Minnesota
July 19, 2006 (My 35th Highpoint)

I was in Minnesota for a week in July to visit my dad, who lives in Longville, MN, and to go to the 10,000 Lakes Festival in Detroit Lakes, MN. Before the festival started my dad and I decided to drive up towards Grand Marais on the scenic SR-61 which runs along the northern coast of Lake Superior. Once in Grand Marais, we took the Gunflint Trail (CR-12) and a series of county and forest roads for about 15 miles to reach the trailhead at the intersection of Bally Hill Road (Forest Route 158) and The Grade (Forest Route 170).

We reached the trailhead and began hiking at 8:55 AM with temperatures in the mid 70's. Along the early part of the trail we spotted a red squirrel and a woolly caterpiller. The Eagle Mountain trail gains all of its elevation once it splits off from the trail going to Brule Lake, just west of Whale Lake. The distance from the trailhead to the trail split is about 2.6 miles. The last part of the trail is about .6 miles and is a change from the previous section. There are some nice views along this part of the trail, overlooking the Superior National Forest, but there is no view from the top.

The anticlimactic summit of Eagle Mountain. I forgot my hiking boots - note the cranked-up wool socks with sneakers and the green long sleeve shirt that I wear ALL the time.
