MOUNT GREYLOCK - 3,487 FT.
Highest Point in Massachusetts
May 30, 2004 (My 22nd Highpoint)
Mount Greylock was my second highpoint on my trip to New England. After summitting the
highpoint of Connecticut earlier in the day, I took US-7 North through Pittsfield and
just followed the signs for the Mount Greylock State Reservation. The drive from Mount
Frissell took about 2 hours (including a brief stop for breakfast). Once on Rockwell Road,
I saw a coyote run across the road.
There were a crapload of people here, which was not surprising given that it was Memorial
Day weekend.
The highpoint tower is probably the nicest building on any highpoint. The Bascom Lodge is
also atop the summit and provides a great place for hikers on the Appalachian Trail to rest
up as the trail passes within 100 yards of the lodge. I climbed to the top of the tower
took one picture and left for Jerimoth Hill, the highpoint of Rhode Island.
