HOOSIER HILL - 1,257 FT.
Highest Point in Indiana
May 16, 2004 (My 19th Highpoint)
After "climbing" Taum Sauk in Missouri earlier in the day, I raced to eastern Indiana to
get to Hoosier Hill before dark. I actually made it, but it's not obvious from the picture,
since the highest point is surrounded by trees. I took I-70 from St. Louis to Richmond, IN.
Note that even though Indiana is in the Eastern Time Zone, (this part of) Indiana does not
recognize Daylight Savings Time, so during DST, Indiana is "part of" the Central Time Zone
and it is an hour earlier than the Eastern Time Zone.
When contacting the Goble family (who owns the highpoint), they informed me that it would be
too dark to visit after 8:00 PM. The fact that Indiana does not recognize Daylight Savings
Time gave me an extra hour (sort of) to get to the highpoint. After exiting I-70 in Richmond,
I jumped on SR-227 for 10 miles or so to County Line Road to Elliott Road.
I parked at the "highest point" road sign and walked all over the cornfield looking for a
break in the wooded area, but couldn't find anything until I began walking back to my car.
Holmes says that the clearing in the wooded area is about 50 yards from the road; it's not
even half of that. However, the driving directions and diagram are right on. I stayed at
the summit for less than 5 minutes and then made my way to Greenville, OH to stay for the
night.
I know, you really can't see jack squat. It was late.
