Outline of Lab One: The Basics of Stataquest and MS Word

  1. You must have a formatted high density, 3.5 inch diskette with you in the lab. You can only save files to the diskette.

  2. To start stataquest, double-click on its shortcut, to exit, click on the x in the upper right hand corner of its window.

  3. To start MS Word, double-click on its shortcut, to exit, click on the x in the upper right hand corner of its window.

  4. To go back and forth between SQ and Word, click on the taskbar or use alt-tab

  5. To read a data set from Devore & Peck while in the lab (Problem 3.49 for example),

  7. To save a data set to your diskette:

  8. To see the contents of a data set after reading or creating it, click on browse.

  9. To get numerical summaries of variables (price and mpg for example in the auto data under e\Wstataq\Datagen):

  10. To get a histogram for a variable (price from 3000 to 16000 with 10 bars, for example):

  11. To get a scatterplot of one variable versus another (price vs. mpg, for example):

  12. To print a Word document to the ACC: do File -> Print . Make sure the box that pops up says that the print is going to the ACC and check under properties that letter size paper is being used.

  13. To cut and paste text from result window to a frame in MS Word: Use the mouse to highlight the text, then click on Edit -> Copy text then switch to Word and do Edit -> Paste. Make sure to create the frame in Word first. You'll have to make sure the font of the text is correct.

  14. To copy a graph to a frame in MS Word: Do Edit -> Copy graph then switch to Word, then do Edit -> Paste. Make sure to create the frame in Word first.

  15. To run a Concept Lab: Click on labs and then click on the lab you want. The labs are listed in the same order as the chapters of the Newton & Harvill book. Each lab has a ``guided tour'' in the book and a help file online.
