Outline of Lab One: The Basics of Stataquest and MS Word
- You must have a formatted high density, 3.5 inch diskette
with you in the lab. You can only save files to the diskette.
- To start stataquest, double-click on its shortcut,
to exit, click on the x in the upper right hand
corner of its window.
- To start MS Word, double-click on its shortcut,
to exit, click on the x in the upper right hand
corner of its window.
- To go back and forth between SQ and Word, click on the
taskbar or use alt-tab
- To read a data set from Devore & Peck while in the lab
(Problem 3.49 for example),
File -> Open -> {e:} -> {Wstataq} -> {Data} -> {Chap3} ->
{Ex0349}
- Any command in brackets,
{like this}
, means double click.
- The data sets are by chapter under
e\Wstataq\Data
- To create a data set:
Data -> Edit data ->
Use the spreadsheet editor to enter
all your data -> Close
- Using the spreadsheet editor takes practice!
- To save a data set to your diskette:
File -> Save as
enter the file name you want on your
floppy (including the a:).
- To see the contents of a data set after reading or creating it,
click on
browse
.
- To get numerical summaries of variables (price and mpg for
example in the auto data under
e\Wstataq\Datagen
):
Summaries -> Means and SDs -> price -> mpg -> OK
- To get a histogram for a variable (price from 3000 to 16000
with 10 bars, for example):
-
Graphs -> One variable -> Histogram -> Continuous variable
-> price -> 3000 -> 16000 -> 10 -> OK
- To get a scatterplot of one variable
versus another
(price vs. mpg, for example):
-
Graphs -> Scatterplots -> Plot Y vs. X, with regression line
-> price
(for Y) -> mpg
(for X) -> OK
- This will draw the scatterplot of price vs mpg and draw a line that
best fits the points.
- To print a Word document to the ACC: do
File -> Print
. Make sure the box that pops up
says that the print is going to the ACC and check under properties
that letter size paper is being used.
- To cut and paste text from result window to a frame in MS Word:
Use the mouse to highlight the text, then click on
Edit -> Copy text
then switch to Word and do
Edit -> Paste
.
Make sure to create the frame in Word first.
You'll have to make sure the font of the text is correct.
- To copy a graph to a frame in MS Word:
Do
Edit -> Copy graph
then switch to Word, then
do Edit -> Paste
.
Make sure to create the frame in Word first.
- To run a Concept Lab:
Click on
labs
and then click on the lab you want.
The labs are listed in the same order as the chapters of the Newton & Harvill
book. Each lab has a ``guided tour'' in the book and a help file online.
