Alternative Medicine Trials: Personal Reflections
Alternative and complementary medicines are extensively used. For the past three years I have served on an NIH data safety monitoring board (DSMB) which advises on multiple clinical trials that study the efficacy of alternative medicines and practices. Such trials involve special issues, several of which will be discussed. The goal of this talk is not to provide definite recommendations, but to introduce statistical and ethical concerns that arise in such trials. I will comment on how I got chosen to this DSMB, the role of a DSMB, and the duties of a statistician on such a board. A flavor will be provided for some of the statistical, ethical, and other concerns raised.
